Phillies trade RP Pat Neshek to Rockies for three prospects

The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off a pretty impressive trade Wednesday evening, acquiring three minor league prospects from the Colorado Rockies for veteran reliever Pat Neshek.

Neshek, 36, has been absolutely brilliant thus far this season. The righty is pitching to a 1.12 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in 43 appearances. He adds to what has been a questionable bullpen for the surprising Rockies as they look to earn a trip to the playoffs.

Though, the real story here is that Philadelphia was able to add three high-upside prospects for a veteran reliever that’s set to become a free agent after this season.

The team picked up low-level prospects Alejandro Requena, J.D. Hammer and Jose Gomez in the deal. Requena was pitching to a 2.85 ERA and 1.08 WHIP while striking out 97 batters in 117 innings in Single-A.

A fellow pitcher, Hammer was a 24th-round pick of the Rockies last year. Thus far this season, he’s dominated to a tune of a 2.36 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in between two Single-A levels.

Meanwhile, Gomez was hitting .324 in low-level Single-A ball at the time of the trade. As with the other two players acquired in this deal, the shortstop figures to be ways away from the majors. But at the very least, Philadelphia added to its farm system by moving a player it was likely going to lose in free agency to begin with.
