Former NBA player gets one year in jail for gun charges

Former NBA player Keith Appling played one year in the Association for the Orlando Magic back in 2015-16. Prior to that, he starred for the Michigan State Spartans and head coach Tom Izzo.

Appling is now set to spend the next year in jail after he plead guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing or resisting arrest stemming from an August 2016 arrest in Michigan.

“Former Michigan State University basketball star Keith Appling was sentenced Thursday in Wayne County,” a local ABC affiliate in Detroit reported. “A judge ordered that Appling serve 5 years probation which includes serving one year in the Wayne County jail for carrying a concealed weapon and assaulting, obstructing or resisting arrest.”

Appling will serve the entire year in jail without the possibility of early release. In exchange, the prosecution agreed to drop two other chargers against the former Michigan State point guard.

An undrafted rookie free agent back in 2015, Appling averaged just 1.2 points in five games with the Magic. That came on the heels of a career in East Lansing that saw him averaged 10.6 points en route to leading the team to three Sweet 16 appearances.
